Judy Thönell

Judy Thönell did her basic music teacher training at the University of Cape Town. In 1990 she completed a Masters degree in Music Education at the University of Stockholm, where she lived for 15 years.

Judy has taught in South Africa, Sweden, Zimbabwe and Australia, in classes and as a studio teacher, on piano, recorder, violin, and also worked with choirs and ensembles.

From 1990 – 1999 Judy Thönell worked in a voluntary capacity at the Callaway International Resource Centre for Music Education (CIRCME), School of Music, the University of Western Australia, serving as Executive Officer from 1992 to 1999.

Judy Thönell was appointed to the International Society for Music Education (ISME) Commission for Music in Schools and Teacher Education (MISTEC) and was co-chair from 2000-2002. She served on the nominating committee for the ISME Board in 1998. Judy Thönell was ISME Secretary General from 2001 to 2012 and during that time ran the ISME International Office.

She is Honorary Secretary of the Royal Schools Music Club and was involved with the ABRSM (international music examinations) as Honorary Local Representative for Western Australia, and co-ordinator for Australia for 26 years.
